ESSENCE OF MEXICO
Quarterly Report
August - 0ctober 2002

The first 3 months of the Essence of Mexico project have been spent coordinating schedules, procedures, and supplies with it's two recipient institutions, the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) and the Benson Latin American Collection, University of Texas at Austin (BLAC). Housing standards and projected supply requirements were assessed with Jennifer Lee, Preservation Officer for the UT General Libraries. At BLAC, Head Librarian Ann Hartness, Latin American Bibliographer Don Gibbs and Librarian Michael Hironymaus provided information on their facility's procedures, policies and standards; this information has been essential to constructing project structure and calculating work flow.

George 0. Jackson, Jr.'s. collection, presently on deposit at the BLAC, was reviewed in its entirety by GOJJR & the project archivist. His personal material was removed: images which will not be included in the project or covered by the inventory were removed. The remaining images comprise 13 long boxes and 2 short boxes of 35mm slides and a few mounted sheets of color transparencies, roughly 120 linear feet of material. In addition, the BLAC holds two oversize map drawers of large prints from the collection material which were donated previously as a gift from GOJJR. Collection material has been ordered chronologically, first by festival and then by geographic location. A preliminary folder-level box description has been drawn up.

SAMA, serving as the administrating institution on the project grant, finalized its contract and tems of administration with project staff. Quarterly reports on the project will be submitted to SAMA: monthly tallies of hours worked by all project personnel also will be submitted beginning 1 November 2002.

At the primary project work site, technologies (hardware and software) were acquired per the terms of the grant and installed. A Filemaker database is being created for the inventory. A projected work schedule was drawn up and discussed with Marina Walne. As of 1 November, the first box of material his been rehoused, organized, ordered, and cataloged. The second box is underway.

The grant proposal has been reordered for the second phase of fundraising, and proposal materials updated to reflect current project status.

During this first quarter, images from the Essence of Mexico project were featured in
SAMA's Children's Day events, official and educational publications of the Houston
International Festival, and the invitation to the BLAC 75th Anniversary celebration.
